You can, but the leak doesn’t stay the same size – and on BMWs, where the oil goes matters as much as how much. Oil on the serpentine belt or the exhaust is a breakdown and fire risk, not just a mess. A gasket fixed early is always cheaper than the damage a leak causes left alone.
Why is the oil filter housing gasket such a big deal on BMWs?
Location. It sits right above the serpentine belt on most BMW six-cylinders. A leaking housing gasket soaks the belt in oil, and a compromised belt can shred and get drawn in behind the crankshaft pulley – which can destroy the front crank seal and worse. Do you replace the whole valve cover or just the gasket?
